Rushden v Harriers

  • Kick off: 2:30pm Sat 15 Nov 08
  • Referee:
  • Venue: Nene Park
Final score:
Rushden and Diamonds 0 - 1 Kidderminster Harriers

0:00: Harriers' smal band of fans are already in fine voice ten minutes before kick-off. Nene Park is sparsley filled today and the home fans look a little sheepish.

0:00: Rushden certainly don't do small. They have some of the best facilities in the Blue Square Premier, the biggest and best squad and also the most artery hardening yet delicious food. This reporter is more than ready for the big game after indulging in a Diamond Burger. While it sounds indigestible, it's a cholesterol soaked delight with two beef burgers, cheese and bacon. Is there any better food in the BSP?

0:00: Rushden manager Garry Hill left big-money signing Leon Knight out of the squad completely but still have plenty of firepower to call upon if the strike partnership of Michael Rankine and Daryl Clare could not spark. Hill had the luxury of forward Lee Phillips, Andy Burgess and Lee Tomlin on the bench as back-up. Harriers midfielder Russ Penn, who has scored four goals in the last five games against Diamonds, also started against the hosts.

0:00: Good afternoon Harriers fans and welcome to the Shuttle's live match coverage of Rushden v Harriers. Mark Yates' side have a good record at Nene Park and will no dobut fancy their chances today. With his team on a high after last week's FA Cup victory, the manager sticks with the same starting line-up that saw off Cambridge. The only change is the return of defender Luke Jones, who replaces midfielder David McDermott on the bench.

2:00: Brian Smikle tries to skip past right-back Brendan Moloney in the box but the tenaciouis defender wins the ball at the second attempt. The home side break and Rob Wolleaston speeds past Mark Creighton, who is very high up. His cross/shot is easy to take for keeper Adam Bartlett.

4:00: Justin Richards is denied by Chris Hope and a good chances goes to waste. Barnes-Homer beats keeper Dale Roberts in the air and Richards gets on the ball, gets past Curtis Osano and tries to slot the ball into an empty net. He's denied by Hope's well-timed challenge.

5:00: From the resulting corner, Martin Brittain's short delivery is knocked on by Justin Richards at the near post and the ball hits Osano. The Rushden defender does well to take it under control and runs the ball out of the box.

7:00: Harriers buzz around Rushden's box and Brian Smikle slips a pass to Barnes-Homer, who tries to back heel it across goal to his strike partner but Hope is wise to the danger.

8:00: The visitors survive a scare. Marcus Kelly sends in a good cross from the right and the late-arriving Michael Corcoran bullets a header over the bar.

11:00: It takes a sliding challenge by Mark Creighton to clear Michael Rankine's cross behind after the forward broke through Harriers' defence far too easily. From the resulting corner Adam Bartlett easily takes the cross and Harriers' fans chant 'England's number one'.

12:00: The impressive Justin Richards forces a fine diving save from Dale Roberts with a powerful low shot from the right of the box.

14:00: Harriers are in control and have forced four corners in the space of two minutes. Rushden stand up strong and on the fourth set-piece, Roberts takes Martin Brittain's cross.

15:00: Diamonds break and but Keith Lowe does well to block Luke Boden, who attempted to shoot on edge of area.

17:00: Russ Penn looks injured after winning the ball in midfield and the counter-attack breaks down when Brian Smikle only finds a Rushden player. Rushden go on the attack immediately and Michael Rankine trundles towards goal but he's stopped in his tracks by Mark Creighton's scything challenge. There's a stoppage in play as Rankine and Penn both get treatment.

20:00: The game is very open with both sides sweeping down the pitch and neither looks very solid in defence at the moment. Harriers have to be careful not to be too cavalier and get caught out.

21:00: Daryl Clare gets free and heads goalwards but the ball falls into the arms of Adam Bartlett.

23:00: Justin Richards is denied again when his header is tipped over the bar by Dale Roberts after a good left wing cross by Lee Baker.

24:00: Harriers' top scorer sees another decent chance go begging from the corner. Martin Brittain's delivery is good but Justin Richards stoops and heads wide at the far post. He's got his head in his hands and can't believe he hasn't scored yet.

30:00: Mark Creighton directs a header off target from Keith Lowe's free-kick on the halfway line. It's still a very open match.

32:00: If Harriers had their shooting boots on they could be out of sight. This time Matthew Barnes-Homer fluffs a decent half chance. Justin Richards had done well to hold up the ball in the box and slip the ball to his strike partner but his completely mis-times his volley and kicks at air.

34:00: Martin Brittain gets some space on the right and delivers a decent cross that Brendan Moloney heads behind. But Harriers can't make the corner tell as Dale Roberts comes out and collects Brittain's cross.

35:00: Oh, dear, someone call a taxi for Justin Richards. In the space of 90 seconds he sees two chances go begging. First of all he fires in a powerful shot that Dale Roberts does well to save. Moments later Andy Ferrell gets down the left, sends a teasing ball across the box that just needs a touch to be a goal, but Richards blazes over the bar.

38:00: Harriers get a let off when Rob Wolleaston sends in a cross from the right that Michael Rankine and Darryl Clare both go for and get in each other's way. The ball flies wide of Adam Bartlett's goal.

Kidderminster Shuttle: Goal icon 41:00: Goal! Harriers are awarded a penalty after Curtis Osano handles Brian Smikle's left wing cross. Justin Richards isn't put off by Dale Roberts dancing on the line and fires in a powerful effort that the keeper gets a hand to but cannot prevent flying into the back of the net. The hitman celebrates with the Harriers fans behind and looks a little relieved.

43:00: Harriers survive a scare. Marcus Kelly sends in a cross from the left wing, Chris Hope heads it to Darryl Clare but somehow the forward sends his header across goal and out of play. A remarkable miss.

44:00: Diamonds defender Chris Hope looks like their biggest threat and after another good cross by Marcus Kelly, he heads off target.

Kidderminster Shuttle: whistle icon 45:00: Half time Plus three minutes. Lee Baker sees a low driven-in cross blocked by Osano and the referee blows for half-time. Harriers deserve their lead because of the numerous chances they have made. I suspect there could still be plenty of goals in this one in the second half. Don't go anyone internet fans!

48:00: Slow start by both sides in the second period. Justin Richards sees a header fall to Dale Roberts.

50:00: Adam Bartlett is alert and tips over Rob Wolleaston's cross/shot.

54:00: Rushden are seeing a lot of the ball and Rob Wolleaston gets down the right and sends in a cross that is too long for Daryl Clare in the box. So far this second half has yet to come alive.

56:00: Martin Brittain is fouled by Michael Corcoran and delivers a free-kick from the right that Matthew Barnes-Homer heads over. Harriers' fans are in excellent voice and livening up a very quiet Nene Park.

59:00: Both sides are working hard to create something but aren't able to hold onto the ball. Harriers produce a slick move that allows Matthew Barnes-Homer into the box but he is disposessed by Curtis Osano.

Kidderminster Shuttle: yellow card 73:00: Yellow card Dean Bennett is booked for a challenge on Curtis Woodhouse. It certainly wasn't intentional by Harriers' midfield man.

75:00: Terrible miss by Michael Rankine. Andy Burgess' cross had opened up Harriers and the ball fell perfectly for the big hitman, who shanked his volley high over the bar.
