Burr hails four-midable strikers

BOSS Steve Burr has hailed his four-pronged strike force as Kidderminster Harriers push for the play-offs.

The manager could not be happier with the quartet of hitman at his disposal.

Their effectiveness was illustrated on Saturday as top-scorer Ryan Rowe made it 10 for the season and Jamille Matt bagged his eighth in as many games to sink bottom side Barrow.

With Anthony Malbon and the rapidly progressing Nathan Blissett also to call upon, Burr is more than satisfied with the goal-scoring options he can unleash on the Blue Square Bet Premier.

He also would love to see one of his hitmen reach the 20-goal mark and lead the division’s scoring charts.

“We brought Ryan into the side because we thought Anthony Malbon just needed a little break,” said the manager.

“Anthony has been performing brilliantly for the team with his work rate but he’s not scored for a while so a rest will do him good.

“Fair play to Ryan, he’s not been in the side for a spell and he scored a tremendous goal on his return.

“I am not one for rotating too much but we’ve got four forwards who can do the job for Harriers.

“What you ideally want is one of your strikers scoring 20 goals and topping the charts but as long as they’re playing well and the team is getting results I will be happy.”

Burr was also delighted with the news that key defender Josh Gowling had turned down at least two offers from Football League clubs to sign a two-and-a-half year deal to keep him at Aggborough on Saturday night.

The 29-year-old has played a major role in Harriers’ dramatic rise up the table.

With Matt also signing a new deal last week, it means the Reds have made a very encouraging start to the January transfer window. The manager also said he may try and add one or two new faces, although that would depend on moving out fringe members of the squad first.

Burr enthused: “Talks had been on-going for a while with Josh and I am delighted with the news he has signed.

“There were one or two Football League clubs who wanted him and in fact one told him not to play against Hereford on New Year’s Day in case he picked up an injury.

“To be fair I think Josh realised he would be better off with us and we’re delighted to have him at the club.

“We’ve had an excellent start to January with Jamille signing a new deal as well.

“I am sure that Jamma will go onto achieve a great deal in his career but he knows he’s at a club which is doing right by him and hopefully he can achieve a lot here before moving on.”

Kyle Storer is expected to have recovered from an infection in time for Saturday’s trip to promotion rivals Mansfield Town (3pm ko) but wideman Danny Pilkington is still a week away from availability.

n Harriers are holding their AGM at Aggborough on Thursday, January 17.

Their league clash at Forest Green has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 19 (7.45pm). Their home game against Redditch in the Worcestershire Senior Cup clash has been set for Tuesday, February 5 (7.30pm).
