Harriers chairman quits

Kidderminster Shuttle: Harriers chairman quits Harriers chairman quits

MARK Serrell has stepped down as chairman of Kidderminster Harriers.

Serrell ended his three year tenure after a meeting with the board of directors and today's 2-2 draw with Braintree.

A personal statement from Serrell said:

"It is with a heavy heart that I have today decided to resign from my position as Chairman of Kidderminster Harriers Football Club, with immediate effect.

I am proud and honoured to have played a part in helping to rebuild Kidderminster Harriers over the past three years or so, but during the past few weeks it has become apparent that supporters have lost faith in my leadership.

I have always respected the fans view - although a minority have now tainted my opinion because of the personal nature of their vile and abusive attacks on me via social and electronic media.

Both Ruth and I have family in the local area including parents, children and siblings and we are concerned about their well-being.

"It is now my intention to put my wife, family and business interests before those of Kidderminster Harriers Football Club although I still intend to support the Club.

I can also confirm that Ruth will be relinquishing her directorship.

Kidderminster Harriers is a fantastic Football Club and we hope our departures will herald the start of an unprecedented era of success in its history.

Come On You Reds."

Some people have short memories. There would be no Harriers in the Conference premier had it not been for Mark Serrel's intervention four years ago. After the sorry debacle of the Norgrove years, he got the club into a safe financial position. Yes, he has made an error of judgement in bringing Andy Thorn in as manager, but a new manager was needed, after his dalliance with Forest Green Rovers, Things didn't go so well with Burr, and those who say he turned down FGR to stay at Harriers have got it wrong, FGR turned him down. Thorn's tactics differ but, in reality, Burr only played with one up front because his 4-3-3 system entailed the other two 'strikers' playing wide and, this poor run of results, FA Cup excepting, started under Burr's reign.
So now we have a manager who is not popular with the masses and no chairman. So much for the dream of league football next season. Watch out Evo-Stick southern league, here we come!

Having worked at the harriers, I have to say that this is bad news for the club. Not many people see what happens behind the scenes of the club and just turn up on a match day. The club is going to really miss Ruth. (Marks wife) Ruth really is the engine of the club and has committed a lot of her own time running the club on a day to day basis. Mark also spent a lot of his time at the club, when he has his own business to run too, but Ruth is the one that is going to be really missed at the club !!!
