GARY Whild is sure Kidderminster Harriers have the goal power to step up their push for the play-off spots in the Vanarama Conference.

The Reds manager made a double swoop last week when he brought back legendary goal-machine Lee Hughes and Burton Albion loanee Dominic Knowles.

Hughes, who struck 70 times in 139 appearances in his first spell at Aggborough, was a free agent after his contract at Forest Green Rovers was cancelled by mutual consent and put pen to paper until the end of the season.

With recent addition Danny Wright also on board, Whild is hoping for goals galore.

Kidderminster are currently seventh in the table, just a point off fifth-place.

He said: “We think we’re in a great position considering everything that has gone on behind the scenes and we’ve got a great opportunity to make the play-offs.

“It’s important that we don’t put any pressure on young lads like Jamie Spencer and Akwasi Assante.

“I think it’s fair to say that we needed people on board to convert the chances we were making and in Danny Wright and Lee Hughes we have brought in experienced guys to do it.”

Harriers saw their home game against Eastleigh postponed because of a waterlogged pitch on Saturday and are set for another free weekend because opponents Gateshead are meeting Wrexham in the FA Trophy.

Their next game is on Tuesday at Stourbridge in the Worcestershire Senior Urn semi-final (7.45pm ko), while the next league game is on February 14 against Woking.

Whild also praised winger Marvin Johnson, who earned a move to Scottish Premier League side Motherwell.

“I’m pleased for the lad first and foremost,” he commented. “He has been an asset to the club, and I’m disappointed to lose him because he has had a fantastic season overall.

“It’s a great move for him and it will be interesting to see how he gets on up there – I wish him all the best.”
