COLIN Gordon believes Kidderminster Harriers should follow the example set by Walsall.

The Reds chief is impressed by the way the SkyBet League One club operates as a business.

Gordon has big plans for Harriers after becoming the club's majority shareholder after obtaining shares from Barry Norgrove, Neil Savery and Jane Murrant.

“The shareholders have entrusted me with the future of the club," said Gordon.

“For the club to survive it needs financial input, which I have guaranteed. I have also guaranteed my time, family’s time and my family businesses’s time to make sure this club can go forward.”

He added: “The leading light for me is Walsall. The chairman runs it totally as a business, he’s very creative in how he supports the football side of things but very tough on the budget he gives them.

“He has great people in Dean Smith and Richard O’Kelly and great facilities and good recruitment, rebuilding players who have been released by bigger clubs.”

Meanwhile, head coach Dave Hockaday is planning to use this weekend's free Saturday from action in the Vanarama National League to work on areas which need improving.

The Reds boss was delighted the club recorded their first win since March 28 when they defeated Woking 1-0 on Saturday.

A first clean sheet of a testing campaign also helped to lift them off the bottom of the table.

Victory prompted wild celebrations at Aggborough but Hockaday was keen to stress that there is still a lot of hard work needed if they are to escape the bottom four.

Harriers' have organised a friendly against Birmingham City under-21s on Friday night (7.30pm ko) but their next league game is at Chester on Tuesday (7.45pm ko).

He said: “The players have already worked very hard and will keep doing so because there are areas that need to be improved.

“It's a good chance for me to spend a sustained period of time focusing on those areas.

"It was brilliant to finally get that first win and you could see it make a huge difference to the players in training."

Matthew Barnes-Homer played a key role in Kidderminster's victory.

The 29-year-old joined on loan from Aldershot last Friday for a second spell, filling the spot left by Reece Styche's temporary switch to Macclesfield.

Barnes-Homer played at Harriers between 2006 and 2010 and scored 34 goals before being sold to Luton.

Harriers were also interested in bringing back former goal-scoring hero Jamille Matt on-loan from Fleetwood Town but he looks set to join a League Two club.

Former Werder Bremen youngster Dino Fazlic, who was also at Bolton, Fulham and NK Zadar and was handed a short term deal until January, also made an impressive second half debut.

Harriers are still keen to improve in certain areas but with funds sparse they must move players out before drafting any new faces in.

Midfielder Aman Verma has also joined fellow strugglers Torquay United on-loan until January.

Harriers are also set to run a fans forum next Thursday at the Aggborough Suite.
