STOURPORT High School student Mia Clarke came away from her first ever World Kickboxing Championships with two bronze medals.

The 12-year-old travelled to Stuttgart in Germany as part of the British ICO squad.

The youngster was fighting in the ring continuous and mat light categories A very nervous Mia started in the ring continuous section against former world champion Anya Simons.

The first round went to Clarke’s southpaw opponent.

But she came out stronger in the second after listening to coach Brian Smith and Team GB coach Neil Kelly.

By the end of the round, she started to catch up and the fight ended up as a split decision in favour of Simons.

In the other fight, Rosie Longley from the British squad had a bye due to the German fighter not turning up and then lost on a split decision to Simons.

Mia won bronze in this category.

In the mat light section, the Wyre Forest was set to take on six fighters.

Once again she came up against Simons and the pair produced one of the fights of the tournament.

An encounter which swung in favour of both fighters eventually ended as a split decision in favour of Simons.

Clarke’s next opponent then pulled out of her fight, which meant she would take on French champion Marion Ankrl.

The Stourport UK kickboxer Clarke came out really strong and landed combinations of kicks and punches, which kept her French opponent on the back foot and prevented her from throwing and kicks.

This success secured a second bronze medal for the gifted young martial artist.

Smith said: “Stourport UK Kickboxing Club and Mia’s family are very proud of her and all the students that helped her prepare for this event.

“To become a double bronze medallist in just two years and also be the current British champion is a testament to her dedication and hard work.”
