COLIN Gordon hailed Kidderminster Harriers’ never-say-die spirit as two wins postponed their relegation from the Vanarama National League.

The Reds kept their season alive as they saw off fellow basement battlers Welling 2-1 on Saturday and Halifax 1-0 on Tuesday night.

While the Aggborough outfit’s relegation remains inevitable – with nine points left to play for they are eight points from safety – the club’s chief executive and caretaker manager has been cheered by their recent run of good form.

Harriers have lost just once in six matches and moved off the bottom spot in the process.

They will be aiming to make it three wins in a row at home to when they entertain Barrow on Saturday (3pm ko).

Even a win at the weekend would not prevent their tumble into the second tier of non-league football if Halifax beat title-chasing Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.

But Gordon believes his young side are laying down a marker for next season in the National North.

He said: “I just think we could beat anybody; two wins in a row is lovely and we’re on a good run.

“I just wish we’d had this team in the summer with a pre-season under our belt, we’d be nowhere near the bottom four.

“Our fate is sealed, we just want to show our fans we’ll be a force no matter what league we will be in.”

Meanwhile, Gordon ruled out a move to bring back Steve Burr to the club as manager.

Burr, who guided Kidderminster to second place in the 2012-13 season, left Chester last week after a disappointing season.

While there was a clamour by fans on social media to bring him back, Gordon was clear that the club would be moving forward. He revealed he had been working on a new manager since January and had plans in place.

Former Harriers player Ian Foster, who is currently coaching at Portsmouth, has been linked to the vacant Aggborough hot-seat.

Meanwhile, Wyre Forest youngster Luke Maxwell looks to have played his last game in a Harriers shirt after Birmingham City recalled him for the rest of the season.

Maxwell was a product of Kidderminster’s football academy and broke into the first team last season before being sold to the Blues for £75,000.

“Luke Maxwell is probably going to be recalled by Birmingham for the rest of the season,” added Gordon.

“Gary Rowett has been in touch to say he’s been doing so well they want him in five days a week.

“That’s alright because he’s not going to be our player next year and the sooner he gets in the first team the more money we get.”

l The club have revealed they are to have a new training facility, which will include three pitches and changing rooms, on the site of the driving range on Zortech Avenue.

The facilities are part of a new agreement in their academy partnership with Birmingham Metropolitan College.

Harriers currently train on the college’s Centre of Sporting Excellence on the Brintons Chainwire site nearby.
