KIDDERMINSTER Harriers boss Steve Burr says his players must not let setbacks knock their confidence as he targets another impressive unbeaten run.

Burr is keen for his young charges to build on their fine win over Droylsden in the FA Trophy on Saturday, when they resume in the Blue Square Bet Premier with a trip to relegation battling Alfreton (3pm kick-off).

The manager was pleased his sixth-placed side bounced back from last week’s mid-week loss to Gateshead, which ended an 11-game unbeaten run.

He is well aware younger players can take defeat to heart but is sure his side is capable of going on another streak, which would pile the pressure on their rivals for the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off spots.

“We’ve bounced back well from our loss to Gateshead with a good win at home to Droylsden and I would like us to go on another run,” said the manager.

“We’re more than capable of doing it again, although you can never tell what’s going to happen.

“The players were really down after the Gateshead defeat but Gary (Whild) and I pointed out what a fantastic run they had been on before.

“Young players can have their confidence knocked by defeats but on the up side when they go on a run they fear no one.”

Harriers will welcome back cup-tied duo Tony Breeden and Lee Hendrie, while Luke Jones has completed his one-match suspension.

However, Lee Vaughan, James Vincent and Jack Byrne remain doubts because of knee injuries. After Alfreton, Burr’s troops then welcome play-off rivals York City to Aggborough next Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off).

Meanwhile, Harriers are still searching for new additions to bolster their play-off push, following Hereford winger James McQuilkin’s arrival on a month’s loan.

The 23-year-old made an eye-catching debut in the second-half against Conference North side Droylsden.

Burr hinted he is close to bringing in another player before Saturday’s trip to Derbyshire.

“It looks as though we might be close to bringing in on one of our number one targets,” said Harriers’ manager.

“We’ve had a few obstacles in the way but hopefully we’re close and we might bring him in before Saturday.

“We’ve got a list of players we are interested in, they’re not second or third choices, they are just other options.”

However, the club’s pursuit of Cookley-based striker Ryan Rowe could have come to an end after Southern League Premier side Stourbridge rebuffed their interest.

It is believed Harriers’ have made two bids for the 23-year-old, who shot to national fame during the Glassboys’ extraordinary run to the FA Cup second round.

Chairman Mark Serrell was tight-lipped about any possible move for the Stourbridge striker, refusing to confirm or deny any approach had been made.

Elsewhere, interest in much sought after forward Jamille Matt continues, with scouts from Crawley and Milwall attending Saturday’s victory to run the rule over the 13-goal hitman.

Harriers will either meet Hinckley United or Luton Town in the FA Trophy third round on Saturday, February 4.

The two sides were set to meet last night after their second round clash at the weekend was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

Meanwhile, the club are seeking a new date for their home clash with Wrexham because of the Trophy, while the league clash against Fleetwood has been brought forward to Friday, March 9 (7.30pm kick-off) because it is to be televised.
