Whild: Winless Harriers are not panicking

KIDDERMINSTER Harriers have refused to press the panic button ahead of Saturday’s trip to Alfreton Town (3pm).

Despite going nine games in the Blue Square Bet Premier without a win this season, the mood remains upbeat at Aggborough.

Assistant boss Gary Whild insisted: “We’re doing everything that we have done before.

“Most of the players we have here were with us when we were winning games.

“Both manager Steve Burr and I have confidence in these players, they’ve served us well in the past and we have faith in them — nobody is panicking yet!”

Harriers head for Derbyshire on the back of four drawn games and Whild says that the Aggborough side must start turning their draws into wins.

He added: “To get that first win on the board is the objective at Alfreton, although it won’t be easy.

“They have made a decent start to the season and in their last home game they beat Luton Town 3-0.

“In the couple of years since I’ve been here, winning has become a bit of a habit. We’ve lost that at the moment, but once we get that first win on the board, I believe others will follow.”

Whild admitted Harriers sudden inability to score goals has become a problem having tried numerous combinations.

He said: “But none of them seem to have clicked at the moment to the point at where our lack of goals has become an issue.

“It’s not just the striker’s, because the midfield haven’t been chipping in with goals either.

“We’ve got plenty of goals all over the pitch, it’s just that it isn’t firing properly.

“Strikers need to score goals because it breeds confidence but I’m sure they will come.

“We have shooting practice after every training session, that’s the puzzling thing, we’re not doing anything different that we haven’t done before.

“We’ve got to believe what served us so well in the past will serve us well again.”

Following Saturday’s trip to Alfreton, Harriers head for Cambridge United on Tuesday night.

The Harriers assistant boss said: “Cambridge were one of the sides who we were led to believe were going places this season — but it hasn’t happened.

“Nevertheless, we face two tough away games and to get anything out of them, we’ll need to be at our best.”

Meanwhile, Harriers made attempts to bring in a couple of players this week to fill the void left by injured midfield men Jack Byrne and Kyle Storer.

Byrne has already been ruled out for most of the season with an Achilles injury, while Storer has undergone surgery on knee cartilage and could miss the next six weeks.

Whild said: “They’re big players for us.

“The couple of deals we tried to do, didn’t work out and as a result, there won’t be anyone coming in before Saturday.”

Harriers also have a doubt about central defender Josh Gowling, who didn’t train this week after feeling unwell.

Whild added;”We’re hoping it’s just a bug and that he’ll be OK for Alfreton. Josh has done well since coming into the side and we can ill afford to lose him”
