First-half goals from Joe Lolley and Nathan Blissett were enough to allow Kidderminster Harriers to end Southport’s unbeaten home record.

Despite their injury woes which left Harriers down to their last 16 players - including long-term absentee Jamie Tolley on the bench - Steve Burr’s side showed plenty of spirit and determination to extend their undefeated sequence to five matches.

Harriers were given the perfect start when livewire Lolley, who had already had a stinging drive tipped over, netted after seven minutes. Amari Morgan-Smith’s shot from Lee Vaughan’s deep right-wing cross hit the post and Lolley was in the right place at the right time to drill home from ten yards for his fourth goal of the season.

It was one-way traffic after that but for all the attacking threat of Blissett and Lolley and the promptings of Lee Fowler and Kyle Storer and Port keeper Danny Hurst was untested.

Instead the hosts forced their way back into the game and they equalised on 43 minutes. James Milligan clipped over a free-kick 30 yards from goal and defender James Smith headed firmly goalwards, with the ball squirming through the hands of keeper Nathan Vaughan.

Harriers’ response came three minutes later. Lee Vaughan was again the creator, with a cross from the right, and Blissett was unerring with his header from ten yards. It was his first goal of the campaign.

Southport, managed by ex-Villa favourite Alan Wright, were much more of a threat after the break. Karl Ledsham’s right-footer lacked power to beat Nathan Vaughan on 69 minutes from their best chance, while Danny Hattersley’s close-range effort was blocked.

But Harriers also had their sights of goal. Jack Byrne dragged a low shot a foot wide and substitute Marvin Johnson twice had angled shots saved by Hurst.
