Frisbee stars earn international call-ups

TWO MEMBERS of Stourport's Psychedelic Rhinos Ultimate Frisbee team have been selected to represent Great Britain in prestigious tournaments but need sponsorship to see their international dreams realised.

Tim Griffin, 16, has been selected for the Great Britain squad competing in the under-19s section of the World Ultimate and Guts Championship in Vancouver in August.

Stourport High School pupil Carla Link, 14, has been chosen to represent the country in the under-17s section of the European Championships, which are held in Slovakia in July.

The duo impressed coaches while playing for the Rhinos in the National Indoor Championships in Plymouth earlier in the year and were invited for trials with the national team.

Griffin has captained the Rhinos at the UKUA under-18 National Indoor Championships, where the team finished 13th and was voted most valuable player at a tournament in Southampton.

For Griffin, who is studying plumbing at Worcester Technical College, to compete in Vancouver he will need to raise £1,500 to pay for training, accommodation and travel to Canada.

Link will need to raise £300 if her dream of European glory is to come true.

"Tim has always got his teeth into things and been determined to be the best," said his father Bob Griffin.

"I would love to see him go to these championships, but without help funding we won't be able to afford it."

Both Tim and Carla have applied for help from Wyre Forest District Council's XPRESSIONS grants scheme.
