Mullen’s reign in Cinders
STOURPORT Swifts found themselves out of the FA Trophy and without a manager by Saturday evening following their dismal 4-0 drubbing at Cinderford Town.
Boss Phil Mullen quit after seeing his BGB Southern League Midland strugglers swept aside by the Forest of Dean outfit, themselves without a manager.
There had been little to choose between the sides in a dreary opening but Swifts conceded on the stroke of half-time and it was downhill from then on.
The goal came from the penalty spot. Stourport substitute Mark Wolsey, who had replaced central defender Scott Stamps inside the opening 15 minutes, handled in a goalmouth scramble and Richard Kear tucked the kick home.
Cinderford doubled their lead on the hour when Jimmy Cox beat the offside trap before pushing the ball beyond Craig Humphries in the visitors' goal.
Mullen shuffled his troops for one last time replacing the disappointing Craig Marshall with Richard Colwell while pushing Wes Joyce out of defence and into attack.
But there was to be no way back for Swifts and two more goals from hat-trick hero Kear in the final 15 minutes eased Cinderford into the next round of the competition.
Assistant manager Paul Davies has taken charge of Swifts in a caretaker role.
Swifts: Humphries 7, SMITH 8, Robinson 7, Stamps (Wolsey 12, 5), Joyce 6, Frost 6, Halion 6, Webb 5, Lavery 6, Marshall 5 (Colwell 74), Burgess 5. Subs (not used): Harris, McComisky, Upton.
