New-look Swifts show promise
NEW manager Neil Hunt saw his Stourport Swifts side slip to a 2-0 defeat at home to Rushall Olympic, both goals coming in the final quarter of the game.
But he should take a number of positives from the game, in particular the performance of his defence and the tireless work of midfield trio Scott Stamps, Richard Colwell and Craig Webb.
The Swifts boss opted for experience over youth and the ploy looked like earning his side at least a share of the spoils as the Rushall strikers were continually denied.
Skipper Andy Smith led by example while fellow defenders Adam Robinson, Steve Frost and Peter Wood also produced excellent displays.
They were given a wake-up call after just four minutes when Rushall's Richard Beale lost his marker but his shot from inside the area was blocked by the legs of Stourport keeper Chris Jay.
Swifts went close late in the first half when a Colwell free-kick just eluded Ryan Broadhurst at the far post while Craig Marshall put an effort wide just after the restart.
But after all their hard word, Stourport conceded on 66 minutes when a free-kick was not cleared and when Harry Harris found himself in space on the edge of the area he coolly slotted home.
Another good stop from Jay stopper Damien Charie from doubling the lead a minute later but the Rushall striker made amends on 82 minutes, collecting a pass from former Bromsgrove Rovers frontman Paul Szewczyk before firing into the net.
Stourport's last chance to grab a consolation came deep in injury time but Colwell's 20-yard free-kick flew over the crossbar.
Swifts: Jay 7, SMITH 8, Robinson 8, Wood 7, Frost 7, Colwell 7, Stamps 6, Webb 6, Blake 6, Marshall 6 (Lavery 73), Broadhurst 6 (Andrews 65, 6). Subs (not used): McComisky, Knight, Harris.
