Double bad fortune as Swifts are robbed

SWIFTS boss Neil Hunt bemoaned his side's bad luck after a controversial decision by the referee denied them a point in Monday night's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sutton Coldfield Town at Coles Lane.

The officials ignored claims for a penalty late on that could have rescued a point for the Walshes Meadows side, after Sutton defender Sam Wilson had handled the ball in the box.

To make matters worse Stourport discovered after the game that items had been stolen from their dressing room.

All-in-all it was a bad day for Swifts keeper Chris Jay, who was sent off for dissent after the controversial penalty incident, and then found he had his car keys and wallet stolen.

"We must the unluckiest team in the division at the moment," said Hunt.

"We've played three tough teams like Chasetown, Leamington and Sutton Coldfield in the last few weeks and only lost by a goal so we must be doing something right. I honestly believe we deserved to get something out of those games.

"I really feel for Chris Jay. He's been sent off and then he discovers he has had his card keys and wallet stolen.

"We were certainly unlucky against Sutton.

"We could have been 2-0 up at half-time and then late on we have a blatant call for a penalty ignored.

"Their player handled the ball in the box but the linesman thought it was hand-to-ball. It was an utterly ridiculous decision because it was a 60-yard pass into the box and his hand was in the air.

"Everyone in the ground could see it was a penalty apart from the officials."

Swifts had gone into the game on the back of a 1-0 loss to Leamington on Saturday, where an own-goal by Richard Colwell denied them a deserved point.

Despite defeat Swifts approached the BGB Southern League Midlands Division One clash against Sutton in confident mood.

Swifts went ahead in the 15th minute after Duncan Willetts was brought down by keeper Chris Gemmell and Nathan Jukes slotted home the penalty.

Nathan Moran pulled the home side level and Swifts found themselves trailing when he slotted home a 69th minute penalty, after Willetts fouled Sutton striker Justin Rowe.

But Swifts responded and thought they had won a last-gasp penalty after Wilson handled Willetts' pass, only for the referee to calls for a spot-kick.

Swifts take on Dunstable Town away on Saturday in the league.

Stourport's youth team defeated Bromyard 2-1 on Monday night.
