Swifts defender breaks leg

Stourport Swifts 1
Chesham United 1

DEFENDER Steve Frost's broken leg overshadowed this battling display by Swifts against a Chesham side looking to secure a play-off place.

The experienced Stourport stopper suffered the injury after just ten minutes of the game, a call from the hospital later confirmed a broken fibula and tibia.

Frost and United's Sam Ledger had challenged for the ball - an innocent coming together of two players intent on winning possession.

With both sets of players visibly upset by the injury, it took a while for the sides to settle and it was the visitors who regained their composure the quicker with Sammy Winston being denied by the keeper while Danny Burnell pushed a shot wide of the unguarded net after charging down a clearance.

Chesham did take the lead on 31 minutes when the impressive Adam Parker slipped the ball through to the unmarked Mark Lambert who thundered his shot home from 12 yards.

Winston, a former Norwich City trainee, should have added a second three minutes later but managed to clear the crossbar from in front of goal following more good work from Parker.

The Swifts had struggled to break out of defence but still managed to level a minute before the break when Richard Burgess collected a long clearance before curling his shot just inside the far post.

Chesham continued to have the better of the chances in the second half with Winston hitting the upright before Swifs keeper Chris Jay produced two outstanding saves late on to deny Burnell and Lambert.

For their part, Stourport had two efforts cleared off the line from Will Gayton and Craig Webb but the result seemed insignificant compared to Frost's early injury.

Swifts: JAY 8, Smith 6, Tomkins 6, Wood 6, Frost 6 (Burgess 12, 7), Wolsey 6 (Williams 62, 5), Colwell 7, Webb 7, Willetts 7, Charles 6, Gayton 5. Subs (not used): McComisky, Ladek.
