Carolians reach shield quarters

Kidderminster Carolians 55, Edwardians 19

KIDDERMINSTER Carolians powered into the last eight of the North Midlands Shield as they put lower league Edwardians to the sword on Saturday.

A KCs side missing several regulars were make to work hard by their opponents from Midlands Division Three West (North).

The hosts opened the scoring with just two minutes played, when an incisive run by Andy McLellan was carried on by fellow centre Laurence Hughes, whose pass put in left wing Arthur Chiverton for a try. Seven minutes later, skipper Rob Delahay crossed the whitewash from a five metre scrum but play was called back for a forward pass. But Edwardians could not contain the Marlpool Lane men and scrumhalf Mark James burrowed over for KCs second try.

The conversion attempt by youngster Sam Taylor rebounded off the crossbar but the hosts were hungry to score more and a 60-yard run by Chiverton was halted by a last ditch tackle into touch just short of the tryline. KCs stole the visitors’ throw and hooker Stu Such went over for a 15-0 lead. The home team fell asleep and Edwardians pulled a try back.

KCs stepped it up and after 30 minutes James showed an impressive turn of pace with a 40-yard dash to score, while Taylor added the extras.

The game was delayed when Edwardians’ number 13 broke his leg and when play resumed McLellan found a hole in the visitors’ defence to touch down, as Taylor’s conversion handed KCs a 29-7 lead at half-time. Early in the second half, a home lineout drive was finished off by lock Alex Baldwin and Taylor’s conversion extended their advantage to 36-7. A missed tackle allowed a spirited Ed’s side to run in a second try but Delahay then touched down and Taylor’s successful kick stretched the advantage to 43-12. KCs paid for complacency when Edwardians scored another try.

But the home side had the final say when Matt Rigsby touched down and McLellan converted, before Chiverton added a final try to emphasise KCs’ superiority.

KCs return to action in the Midlands Division Two West (South) at home to Leamington (2.30pm ko).
