Mudge in hot form as Phoenix edge clash

CHELSEA Mudge bagged a brace as Wyre Forest Phoenix edged out Cookley Sports in a tight derby clash.

In a game of two halves, Phoenix did enough in the opening 45 minutes to secure victory.

Mudge opened the scoring in the sixth minute, tapping home after good work by Kirsty Roberts.

She then bagged her second after a long kick by keeper Vicky Hyde dissected Cookley’s defence and Mudge beat two defenders to chase it down and score.

Cookley hit back in the second half and Wyre Forest were forced to battle hard for the win.

Their pressure paid off on the hour mark, when Debbie Prescott finished neatly to make it 2-1.

But Phoenix’s defence held firm to hold onto victory.

Meanwhile, the under-10s were edged out by St John’s Colts.

St John’s took an early lead but Wyre Forest replied almost straight from the kick-off and Ellie Symons made it 1-1.

Holly Tew then fired Phoenix ahead with a shot which slid into the bottom corner.

But the lead only lasted a few of minutes as St John’s drew level for a half-time score of 2-2.

The Colts then made sure of the win with an 80th minute strike.
