Kidderminster Carolians 17, Leamington 9

DESPITE putting in their least convincing display of the season, Kidderminster Carolians maintained their excellent home record by seeing off Leamington on Saturday.

KCs are now unbeaten in eight matches at Marlpool Lane, an impressive record which stretches back to last season.

Ben Binnion made sure the hosts capitalised on a strong start when he crashed over for the opening try.

Leamington responded well and a sustained attack earned them a penalty which was comfortably converted by their fly-half Tom Jewitt.

Another kick by Jewitt then edged the Warwickshire side ahead 6-5.

But powerful number eight Layton Wilkinson restored KCs’ lead when drove over for a score.

Richard Sollum nearly added another try but the accurate Jewitt reduced the points gap to one point with a third penalty.

In the second half, KCs had been struggling to find a way through until replacement back row man Tom Maher injected some much-needed pace.

Andy McLellan combined with Maher and from a ruck, prop Matt Rigsby crossed over for a well-made try.

Importantly, replacement scrum-half Chris Pinner added the conversion to leave the visitors needing two scores to win the match.

A burst out of defence by McLellan and a long pass to left wing Arthur Chiverton almost resulted in another touch down but he was brought down just short of the line to deny KCs a bonus point.

Maher also produced a strong tackle to deny Leamington a score and ensuring victory.

KCs go to mid-table Shipston on Stour in the Midlands Division Two West (South) on Saturday (2.15pm ko).
