Smith and Hawkes win betterball competition

GOLF: Richard Smith and Chris Hawkes won the men’s betterball competition at Cleobury Mortimer.

Played over the Badgers Sett and Deer Park courses, the club’s greenkeepers worked miracles on to get them playing so well after a wet end to the year.

The first group out of Vince Darby and Peter Holyoake took control from the start when they shot an incredible score of 46 points to lead the way all day.

However, they were cruelly beaten by the last group of Smith and Hawkes.

They too shot a 46, but a superior back count gave them victory.

Smith really is the man you want to partner at the moment with him winning the previous betterball back in December.

Meanwhile in the Christmas Turkey Trot, Julie Currie, Eve Saunders and Lyn Pinner were winners with a nett score of 34, ahead of Sue Griffiths, Pam Wright and Gloria Bullock.
