Bewdley ready for the challenge of Alvechurch's Blues contingent

BEWDLEY Town aim to continue their defence of the Worcestershire Senior Urn when they take on Alvechurch at home in the semi-finals on Tuesday night.

While the Ribbesford Meadow side have won the competition for the last two seasons, they face their stiffest test yet.

The Midlands Alliance side boast a wealth of young talent from Birmingham City after linking-up with the Championship outfit’s youth development scheme.

Even more impressively, the Churchmen signed former Blue and West Bromwich Albion hitman Geoff Horsfield last week.

Bewdley defeated Alvechurch in the final at Aggborough in May but joint-boss Craig Payton is expecting a tougher test when the game kicks off at 7.45pm.

He said: “Alvechurch have got some talented young players who could end up playing for Birmingham City.

“They’ve just signed Geoff Horsfield, so it’s a massive test for all the lads in defence.”

Before Town’s quarter-final clash, they have two West Midlands Leage Premier games to cope deal with.

They entertain title hopefuls Lye Town tonight (7.45pm ko) and welcome back Chris Hough, Craig Webb, Robbie Orme and Shaun Wright back into the side.

The quartet were rested ahead of tonight’s game in Tuesday night’s 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Sporting Community.

With Town playing three times a week, Payton is aware of the importance of keeping his players fresh.

“With so many games coming so closely, we have to rest players and I hope the fans understand,” added Payton.

“We put out a young side against Wolverhampton and were over powered but it was a good learning curve for them.

“The experienced players will be back for Lye. It wouldn’t be fair to the other teams at the top if we put out a weakened side for Lye.”

Town then go to Wellington Amateurs on Saturday (3pm ko) and following the Alvechurch clash, take on Bustleholme at home next Thursday (7.45pm ko).
