KIDDERMINSTER Victoria’s woes with the bat continued as another low-scoring display saw them lose to Berkswell by four wickets in the Birmingham and District League on Saturday.
KVCC lost the toss and were asked to bat but it was soon obvious that runs were going to be hard to come by on a slow wicket.
They opened with an unusual pairing of Ben Cox and Connor Smith and the duo did not find scoring easy with the pace of Imran Arif keeping them from scoring too many runs.
However, it was David Brignull who struck a blow to the Kidderminster batting.
With 29 runs scored by the 11th over, he had Cox caught by Dominic Ostler for 15.
With only one run added he struck twice more. He had Connor Smith (9) caught by Phil Neale, then Zac Turley first ball, again caught by Neale.
At 30-3 it was looking grim, and it got worse. With only five more runs scored, Craig Wood was bowled by Warwickshire’s Darren Maddy for a duck.
Neil Pinner together with Andy Kimberlin took the score up to 91 by the 31st over, but Neale was to take a third catch off Tom Lewis to dismiss the former for a good 29.
Richard Kimberlin was run out by Ostler for a duck, and then with the score on the legendry Nelson, 111, Andy Kimberlin fell to a fourth Neale catch, giving Lewis a second wicket.
Kimberlin had scored 36, the day’s highest, striking five fours in his 79 minute stay at the wicket.
A patient knock by skipper Jonathan Wright produced 16 runs, one six and a four, before he was out caught Lewis bowled Arif.
Arif took the final two wickets, Mark Mansell (7) and Gareth Williams (0), both lbw, with Chris Whelan the not out batter on one as KVCC slumped to 129 all out.
The bowling figures tell the real story - Brignull 10-6-4-3, Arif 3-24, Lewis 2-20 and Maddy 1-30.
KVCC’s bowlers took the game to the home side and reduced their batting order to 90-6.
Williams bowled Maddy for 20, and Whelan had Neale caught behind by Cox for nine.
Two more wickets fell with the score on 57. Lewis was leg before to Pinner for 10, and Cox took a second off Smith to dismiss Neale for 10.
The next wicket fell at 88 with Jack Cornick being bowled by Pinner for 12.
Dangerman Ostler, who has top-scored with 600 runs, was dismissed by Mansell for 13.
With Berkswell 90-6, the game was evenly poised but the home scored the required 34 runs from 17 over without losing a wicket.
Mohammed Akhlaq was not out for six, but Chris Cheslin top-scored for Berkswell with four fours in his total of 26.
Pinner had two wickets for 31 from ten overs, Mansell 1-17 from 7, Williams 1-18 off 10, Smith 1-22 off 7 and Whelan 1-34 off 10.
KVCC have secured their place in the Premier Division, but Berkswell need another win from their last two games to feel safe.
Kidderminster travel to Brockhampton on Saturday (noon start).
