Winning draw dents promotion hopes
12:00pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Local
A SIXTH winning draw of the season, this time against Netherton, did Bewdley’s promotion hopes in the Worcestershire League Division Two no good at all, despite being involved in an enjoyable and closely fought game.
Losing yet another toss, Bewdley’s total was built around 72 from Paul Beard, who started slowly but later accelerated nicely.
He was supported by Rob Combes with a whirlwind 32, Mike Harris (29) and Gareth Lewis with a fluent 38.
Netherton were always in the hunt in pursuit, needing only 90 off the last 20 overs with seven wickets in hand, but Bewdley’s bowlers persevered, and aided by a couple of runouts Netherton’s hopes of winning gradually disappeared. Combes (2-36) bowled some swift deliveries, and Rob Crane (1-27) bowled an economical spell at a crucial time.
With matches of the season, Bewdley are fourth in the table but are only 23 points behind second-placed Colwall. Bewdley go to Enville on Saturday (12.30pm start).
The seconds were outclassed at Astwood Bank on Saturday as the runaway league champions secured a comfortable 76 run victory.
Bewdley bowled economically early on but failed to make a breakthrough as Chris Hancox (59) and Paul Boycott (53) serenely posted a century opening partnership.
Mark Hudson (2-78) got through the defence of both in relatively quick succession but that just brought Andy Williams (74 no) and Alex Robinson (44 no) to the crease and they posted a century partnership of their own to take the score to 249 for 2 at the end of 50 overs.
With the used wicket getting lower and lower, runs were hard to come by as Astwood Bank took regular wickets early on in Bewdley's reply.
Only Dave Jones (46) could get to grips with the turning wicket as Dan Taylor (5-27) spun his team to an easy victory, Jones the last man out with the score on 173.
