Cookley boost surival hopes
9:00am Thursday 12th September 2013 in Local
COOKLEY kept their hopes of escaping relegation alive with a 10-wicket win over Combs Wood in Worcestershire League Division Two.
Trailing the hosts by 12 points before Saturday’s clash made this was a must-win game for The Villagers and captain Gary Mills had no hesitation in asking Wood to bat first.
Dan Soley soon dispatched both openers and then Mills himself produced a devastating display taking 4-17, while Paul Thomas chipped in with 3-27 to bowl out the hosts for just 100.
Openers Al Roden and Ad Nicholls (48 not out) eased Cookley home and put them into eighth place and eight points ahead of Wood in 10th.
Cookley take on Wyre Forest rivals Stourport at home on Saturday (12.30pm start) in the final match of the season.
The seconds managed a losing draw against Coombs Wood.
Wood batted first and went for maximum points 233-7 a competitive score.
Cookley response was cautious but at 120-1 (Mike Wood 51, Matty Goode 41) victory looked possible but eventually they ran out of steam and settled for the draw and ensuring they remain in the top flight for next season.
