Bewdley beaten in Vase thriller
12:00pm Friday 13th September 2013 in Local
BEWDLEY Town suffered extra-time heartache as they lost 3-2 to Stafford Rangers to exit the FA Vase on Saturday.
Twice the Wyre Forest club had battled back from behind to force extra-time only for Stafford hitman Adan Cunnngham to put them out with his second goal of the game.
Stafford started the better of the two teams, but Bewdley fought their way into the match and were unlucky to fall behind to a penalty, when Richard Costello was judged to have brought down a Stafford player in the box.
The Worcestershire side fought back and five minutes before the break Sean Wright swung his boot at the ball and it floated over the Stafford keeper to level the scores.
In an evenly matched second period it was Stafford who took the lead again.
In a vastly improved performance from Tuesday night’s loss to Smethwick, Town fought back and substitute Zac Marriott levelled the scores with a headed goal from a corner to take the match into extra time.
In the first period of extra time Stafford went ahead again.
Keeper Simon Dye in the Bewdley goal failed to cut out a cross the ball fell loose in the box and the Stafford number 11 back healed the ball into the net.
Bewdley tried their hardest to equal the scores again but it wasn’t to be and they slipped to a very unlucky defeat.
Town will be looking to bounce back with two matches in the West Midlands Premier.
They go to Wednesfield on Saturday (3pm ko) and take on Bromyard at home on Tuesday (7.45pm ko).
Town are currently 17th in the table after just two wins in their first seven matches.
