Thorne takes the crown
8:00pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Local
ALAN Thorne clinched Habberley’s Club Championship in impressive fashion as he finished with a 12 shot winning margin.
Thorne saw off a field which contained two former winners and was presented with the trophy by trustee Tom Davies, who also has been the new champion’s main mentor when he joined the club five years ago.
Meanwhile, a packed field of golfers showed their support for captain Gary Hawes in the captain’s classic at Cleobury Mortimer.
The better-ball format was made special with the captain and head professional Rob Watkins out playing.
Early starters Pat Fleming and Paul Hannah posted a nett 65 to lead most of the day, having seen off John Gallagher and Graham Pain, Andy and Simon Johnson and Rob and Adam Winnell with a superior back count.
Mark Fish and Richard Hamblin pipped second spot with a 64, however the winners were two of Cleobury future stars.
Josh Rowbotham and Jack Severn tore the course apart with a masterclass to finish on 63.
The duo are part of a long line of youth which has come through the ranks here at Cleoburry Mortimer and we are delighted to see the next generation playing so well.
Cleobury Mortimer Ladies saw 20 teams representing 14 clubs at the AM/AM tournament.
The quartet of Brenda Hayter, Beryl Baker, Paulette Morris and Jean Brayshay (Worfield) won with 88 points.
In second were Wendy Harris, Pauline Tatley, Carol Eves and Denise Crawford (Ross-on-Wye) with 86, while Ros Daws, Babara Clarke, Jenny Dallaway and Jayne Freeman (Redditch) finished third with 85 pounts.
Lyn Jinks won the club’s Sunday medal with a nett score of 80.
In the Ladies medal, Gloria Bullock was first (72net), followed by Juliet Dugdale (77) and Sue Griffiths (78).
