Illness outbreak forces Bewdley game off
3:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in Local
BEWDLEY Town could face a fine after illness forced them to cancel Saturday’s West Midlands Premier clash at Wednesfield.
A stomach bug decimated the squad, which was already low on numbers because of injuries, and meant only six players were available for the weekend.
Bewdley were forced to call off the game at 10.30am on Saturday morning.
Wednesfield are set to submit a request to the league to fine Bewdley for the costs of suppliying food and refreshments for the game.
Club secretary Steve Godfrey said: “We’re not sure where the bug came from but a couple of lads came back from holiday and it might have spread through shared drinks bottles.
“There was nothing we could do, we were already missing several players because of injuries.”
Meanwhile, Town suffered penalty heartache after being edged out in the league by Bromyard 1-0 on Tuesday night.
The Wyre Forest club were handed a lifeline with 15 minutes to go when Steadman fouled Chris Hough but the keeper made up for his error by saving Dan Jones’ penalty.
They also hit the woodwork twice but could not find the back of the net.
Town will be hoping to bounce back when they take on fellow strugglers Malvern Town away on Saturday (3pm ko).
They will be without Craig Webb (holiday), Russell Godfrey (work) and the injured Robbie Orme.
Bewdley then go to big-scoring Lye Town on Tuesday night (7.45pm ko) and entertain high-flying Wolverhampton Casuals next Saturday (3pm ko).
