1:00pm Thursday 24th October 2013 in Local
YOUNGSTER Josh Rowbotham won Cleobury Mortimer’s double roll-up tournament which was held over the weekend.
Andy Thomas found some form as he looked to defend his winter order of merit title with 38 points, securing third place.
Last year’s club champion Nigel Williams shot a splendid 39 point to finish second place and see his handicap reduced once again.
The weekend however belonged to one of the most exciting prospects at Cleobury, when Rowbotham shot a fabulous 41 points to take top spot.
Head professional Rob Watkins said: “It is great to see so many youngsters here at Cleobury doing so well.
“Josh hits the ball a long way and has a great all round game, this time next year he will be off at least a seven handicap, mark my words.”
Meanwhile, outgoing seniors captain Keith Gardner was delighted to finish his year on a high with the presentation of a cheque for £1,000 to the Severn Hospice.
Manageress of the Cleobury Mortimer shop, Gayna Woodland, and her assistant Jayne Leach, were on hand to receive the donation, supported by Graham Pain, representing the Golf Club.
The money had been raised from a series of competitions, raffles and fines imposed during the year of Gardner’s captaincy. Goods were donated to the shop that were sold and raised another £272.62.
A solid performance by Dave Edwards and Mark Tillman saw them ease to a comfortable win over Garry Guest and Jim Loane in the men’s double matchplay final at Burlish Park GC.
