Stourport going in right direct - Takher
4:00pm Thursday 31st October 2013 in Local
THE men’s first team at Stourport have made a solid start to the season in the Midlands Division One under the watchful eye of new head coach Kali Takher.
The Wyre Forest club, who have been in decline for a number of years and have suffered two relegations, have won three of their first four matches.
They saw off South Nottingham 6-3 and Bridgnorth 2-0 before a 7-0 defeat to in-form Worcester.
But Stourport bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Barton at the weekend, sealed by goals for Andrew Cavendish (2) and Charlie Smith.
The team are joint second alongside Hampton, Worcester and Barton, three points behind leaders Burton.
Takher, who took over in the summer, has been pleased by what he’s seen but is not getting carried away.
He said: “It’s still very early on but the team has done very well.
“We played some very tough pre-season games and that opened a few players’ eyes to how they need to perform.
“The biggest thing is to make sure players are enjoying themselves and even after losing 7-0 to Worcester there was a good turn out in training.
“At this stage, I would not be getting carried away if we had won 7-0, it’s more important to see how much we have improved in 12 months’ time.”
Stourport are missing up to ten players for Saturday’s clash Hampton-in-Arden, who are level on points with them.
A number of players have family committments, while Alex Cook, Simon Claris and Dan Petrie are involved in England junior team trials.
