GIFTED young boxer Jerry Mongan made his dream of glory come true after becoming ABA England Schoolboy Champion in his weight section.

The 14-year-old from Stourport saw off Wayne Owen from Berkshire’s Pinewood ABC on a split decision in the final of the 54 kilogram division.

The home schooled teenager went one step better than last year to win the the fabled Lonsdale golden gloves, when he was knocked out at the semi-finals.

Mongan is only the second boy from Stourport to ever win the title and the first since the 1990s.

He is a member of Dudley’s Priory Park club and was roared on by a large contingent.

Brother Michael Mongan said: “Jerry is over the moon with his win.

“He came through six very tough fights to get this far and deserves his success.”

He now faces an eliminator fight against fellow age section champion Levi Lewis to earn a place on the England squad, which will be competing in the Tri-Nations tournament during the summer.

It’s the first time there has been a knockout fight between Schoolboy Champions to earn a spot.

He will fight in Sunderland on the weekend of April 20 and 21.

“It’s unusual to have this kind of fight,” commented his brother.

“It will be a tough one as both will be battle hardened.”
