Mauger’s ton helps Bewdley to victory
1:29pm Friday 16th May 2014 in Local
A REMARKABLE century innings from Simon Mauger saw Bewdley to a comfortable victory over Coombs Wood in Worcestershire Division Two.
Chasing a revised target of 202 following a brief stoppage for rain Bewdley had to consolidate following the loss of an early wicket.
Nick Wilkinson (19) again batted obdurately, Rob Combes added a brisk 17, and Gareth Lewis batted fluently for 31 before falling right at the end.
But the innings was dominated by Mauger whose 113 not out including seven fours and no fewer than seven sixes left Coombs Wood helpless. Mauger’s onslaught means his last three outings against Coombs Wood have yielded 360 runs. Earlier, in wet and blustery conditions Bewdley did well to restrict their opponents to 207.
Andy Platt bowled a beautiful opening spell and deserved figures even better than his 1-22, and the other bowlers also contributed well, especially Mauger with 1-26.
Bewdley go to Enville on Saturday (1pm start).
Meanwhile, the seconds suffered a second consecutive defeat at a windswept Colwall on Saturday. Skipper Beasley won the toss and opted to bowl on what appeared a bowler friendly green top.
Bewdley picked up regular wickets and looked in a good position before Henry Coleman (47) arrived at the crease and produced a display of clean hitting that included some monstrous sixes.
Mat Morgan (70) played the anchoring role of the innings to see Colwall to 261-9 from 50 overs. Veteran left armer Dave Cowdery (2-25) was the pick of the Bewdley bowling with a fantastic 10 over spell.
Bewdley looked well set in their pursuit of the challenging total when they reached 100-1 after 22 overs but a mini-collapse saw them fall short on 225.
This ensured that despite defeat Bewdley gained eight points.
