A YOUNGSTER from Tsunami Karate Club won a gold medal in his first competition.

Frank Southall was first in the six to eight mixed team kumite category at the Kimura Cup.

Also enjoying success was Iain Sinnett who won gold in 16-18 years kumite and bronze in senior black belt kata.

Tsunami’s senior kata team – comprising of Sensei Dave Powell, Iain Sinnett and Teresa Lye – won bronze.

Success has marked a good year for the club, which also did well at the SKF National Championships.

Sinnett moved up into the adult black belt section for kata but still managed to gain a bronze medal. He also repeated the feat in the kumite section.

Lye also made the veterans kata final for the second time and the kata team performed well, but just got beaten to the bronze medal.
