RUNNER Sam Perks was named Wyre Forest District Council’s Senior Sportsman of the year.

The 19-year-old, of Kidderminster, has had a great year on the tracks and roads.

He claimed Worcestershire’s under-20 title in the 3,000 metres and then stepped up to take on senior runners at the Midlands Championships, where he won bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase to become the first ever junior to win a medal in the event.

Mr Perks clinched The Shuttle’s 10 kilometre road race and beat British marathon legend Paula Radcliffe in the Worcester 10km run.

In November this year, he came second in the West Midlands Colleges cross country event and was awarded Halesowen AC’s track performance of the year.

He said: I am truly honoured to have been awarded this prestigious award.

“It has given me even more motivation to continue to make my family and coach proud.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who have supported me throughout this roller coaster of a season.

“A big thanks to my family, coach Richard Warder, physio Roger Bayliss and sponsors Prescott Solicitors and all of my training partners.”
