BEWDLEY Town have plans in place to improve the pitch at Ribbesford Meadows this summer.

The pitch is well-known for how often it floods.

But while it is the nearby River Severn which often gets the blame for the club’s annual home fixture frustration, manager Phil Mullen feels the water running down the slope from the neighbouring B4194 road has the biggest impact.

Town are set to add new drainage in the close season as well as other improvements to the surface, costing around £12,000, with the club looking into grants to help pay for it.

Bewdley played their last two home games at Stourport Swifts, but were set to return to Ribbesford last weekend, only for a waterlogged pitch to postpone their game against Smethwick Rangers.

Mullen said: “I must admit before joining Bewdley I always thought it was the River Severn which caused all the problems, but it’s actually the water running down the slope from the road which is the culprit.

“A three to four-metre side of the pitch gets saturated, but it’s something that we can work on.”

Town’s had made it three wins in a row when they defeated Pegasus Juniors 2-0 last Wednesday, with Luke Morris making it four goals in three games and Alex Lavery also on target.

Bewdley remain 15th in the West Midlands Premier, but face Dudley Town at home on Saturday (3pm ko).

Mullen added: “Unless the weather at the end of the week improves, the game could be off, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

Town then host Wellington on Tuesday (7.45pm).
