LEAH Grosvenor led the way for Samurai at the North West Age Bands event.

The tournament is one of two major ranking events for British Judo’s youngsters at this time of year, with most of the country’s top youngsters there.

But the Wyre Forest club earned three gold medals as well as a silver and bronze.

Nathan Gallacher started the ball rolling with three excellent maximum-point wins out of three, all with different throws, to take the gold in his category.

Such was his control of the contests that he could even afford to rest his favourite throws and experiment on some of the others he has been developing.

Olivia Turner was next up and she had England squad players all the way, but after two contests she was in the final, and although she had to grind out a win, she got there in the end and that made it two golds out of two for Samurai.

Grosvenor then emerged from a strong category to take gold and see off clubmates Darcie Hancocks and Sian Bobrowski.

The trio made mincemeat of the rest of Britain’s best players at that age and weight.

Grosvenor defeated the Scottish number one in the semi-finals, while Hancocks edged out Bobrowski, who earned bronze.

The final was a repeat of the British Championship final but this time Grosvenor held sway.

Bryony Griffiths missed out on a medal after losing in the semi-finals to a strong Britain under-21s player, and was also edged out in the bronze play-off.
