SAMURAI’S Toni Poulsom scythed down the opposition to win an impressive gold medal at the British Schools Western Area Open Championships.

The 14-year-old was superb as she won all three of her contests in impressive style with some great throws and solid groundwork.

Lauren Fletcher was unlucky not to add a second gold medal but won the silver instead in her category, losing the final to a good throw in the end after she had reached the final in spectacular style.

Sam Bravo made it a third final for the Samurai in the young men’s categories. Three good wins out of three saw him into the final where he eventually lost to a more experienced player.

Finally, Olivia Turner added a further bronze with several more fine wins to add to her growing reputation.

As a result of this and other performances, Turner has been co-opted onto the England squad, where she joins Nathan Gallacher, Darcie Hancocks, Leah Grosvenor, Bryony Griffiths and Sian Bobrowska from the Samurai club.

Meanwhile, Samurai held their first junior low grades tournament of the year.

For Alannah Martin, daughter of former club stalwart Matthew Martin, this was her first competition and she did well to win all three of her contests to take the gold medal. Carys Jones was another debutant who was doing well, she won two contests to end up with the silver.

Bonnie Deeming-Lane reached the final with three good wins and was unlucky to lose the final to a much more experienced player.

So she ended with a silver medal while Charlotte Silwood took home two bronzes from two different categories.

In the boys, Martin Allen was in only his second competition and did really well, with three wins out of four contests earning him the silver medal.

Spencer Benton also had three wins to reach the final of his category before losing against the run of play and so also ending with silver. Luke Talbot also had three wins but ended with bronze after losing to Benton in the semi-final after earlier beating the eventual gold medallist, while Alfie Lye had some good wins on his way to the bronze.

Ben Hewitt added a final bronze in the lightest boys group.
