DIRECTOR of rugby Phil Knowles says Kidderminster Carolians can look back on a job well done over the 2014-15 season.

KCs wrapped up an impressive campaign by pushing Midlands Division Two Westy (North) runaway champions Bridgnorth all the way in the North Midlands Shield before being edged out 18-13 at Dudley Kingswinford.

Kidderminster, who finished third in the league after an impressive second half to the season, had lost 37-0 to Bridgnorth in September.

KCs had seen Ian Bletcher leave as head coach last summer and saw well-respected players Andy McLellan and Stuart Such take the reins.

But the new set-up built on the strong foundations built in previous seasons.

“The players gave everything against Bridgnorth, they left everything on the pitch and we should have won,” said Knowles.

“Even Bridgnorth felt we should have won it and it was nice to get the plaudits bit nicer to win the shield.

“But it has been a very good season, we had a lot of injuries in the first half of the season and were missing key players but the lads have worked extremely hard and we had a very good season.

“We lost a fantastic motivational coach in Ian Bletcher but replaced him with two guys who have really improved the players’ understanding of the game.”

Against Bridgnorth, it was the Shropshire side who opened the scoring with a try, before Chris Pinner put away a penalty to make it 5-3.

KCs were in control and Jack Tunstall and edged them ahead with a try before their opponents took a 15-8 lead when they bagged a converted effort and a penalty.

Josh Winfield touched down as Carolians moved cut the gap to two points but Bridgnorth bagged another try to finally see off the Wyre Forest outfit’s charge.

Knowles added: "It was a massive effort by all the lads.

"Our foewards tackled very impressively against a very good side."

KCs now take a break from the season but will commence pre-season preparations in July.

Kidderminster will once again play in the Midlands Division Two West (South) for the second year in a row.

Meanwhile, the club wants volunteers to come out in force to spruce up Marlpool Lane on June 27 and 28 between 10am and 4pm.
