KIDDERMINSTER Olympian Naomi Folkard is set to test her mettle at the first ever European Games.

Folkard will join fellow British archers Amy Oliver, Nicky Hunt and Kieran Slater for the tournament, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan between June 16 and 22.

The home quartet are part 149 other athletes from Team GB, are set to land in Baku today, where they will join over 6,000 athletes from 50 European nations.

There are 20 sports competing across the 17 days of the event, with Team GB participating in 19 of these disciplines.

As with archery at the Olympic Games, recurve bows will be the only type permitted and the GB team brings a wealth of experience in this discipline to the field.

Both Folkard and Oliver have competed at previous Olympic Games, with the latter for the first time at London 2012, while Naomi appearing at the London, Athens and Beijing Games.

Hunt won two gold medals in the compound category at the Commonwealth Games, before switching to the recurve bow five years ago.

The team’s sole male archer, Slater has been competing for eight years and, following numerous achievements at junior level, is continuing to make a name for himself in the senior sport.

Oliver Logan, Archery GB Team Leader, said: “We have a strong squad heading out to Baku 2015 as part of Team GB, with a number of athletes with Olympic and Commonwealth Games experience selected.

"For each of them the European Games represents another opportunity to test their skills against the best in Europe and will be a crucial step on the road to Rio 2016.

"It will also provide a unique opportunity for the athletes to compete in a format that is the same as the Olympic Games providing them invaluable experience ahead of Rio 2016.”

The team selected will compete in four of the five medal events, women’s and men’s individual, women’s team and mixed team.

Following the opening ceremony tomorrow, the European Games run from 12-28 June and the archery competition takes place from 16-22 June at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium in central Baku.
