SOME excellent performances from the less experienced Samurai juniors helped the club win a haul of medals at their open Green Belt and Under Championships at their Zortech Avenue premises.

Samurai's students clinched four gold medals plus three silvers and seven bronzes in a competition which featured 20 other clubs.

Leading the way in the boys were Callum Spencer and Spencer Benton, who won gold and silver respectively.

Aiden Maguire is another exciting young player coming through the ranks.

Emphatic wins against players from Droitwich, Devizes and Stroud saw him into the final of his category against another Stroud player.

Maguire dominated much of the final and gained a good score but his opponent gained a higher graded score to settle for silver.

However, he was later allowed to compete in the higher grade section as well to gain experience and did really well to defeat two much higher graded players to win the bronze there as well.

Brothers Sam and Ben Hewitt also turned in much improved performances and had some good wins, both ending with bronzes.

In the girls, Lola Grosvenor impressed with some excellent techniques on her way to the gold medal.

Another pair of sisters with an experienced elder sister, Lily and Bonnie Deeming-Lane, were in the same category and went onto win silver and bronze respectively.

The last of the Samurai girls to compete was Sophie Pollitt, who had been refereeing for most of the day.

Up against much heavier opponents and despite giving away over 14 kilos in each of her three contests, she won them all with some good tactics and skill to take the club’s fourth gold medal of the day.
