SHAUN Raybould and Phil Lau came out top at Cleobury Mortimer’s club championship at the weekend.

Raybould topped the gross score competition with 146, while Lau edged out John Swithenby on countback in the nett competition.

The championship was played over two days and the first one saw the Foxes Run and Deer Park courses used.

The greens staff had got the course looking superb, with the greens quick and the pins tucked away, it was always going to be a tightly contested championship.

Swithenby led the way overnight in the nett with a two-under 67, closely followed by Steve Scrace who had a 68.

In the gross, Charlie Edwards shot a very impressive 75, Tom Pain recorded a 74 to also be in contention, but day one belonged to Raybould who despite bogeying the last shot a 70 to take a four-shot lead into the second day.

Day two was played over the Badgers Sett and Deer Park courses in glorious sunshine.

Guy Taylor went under the radar with a nett 69 which propelled him into third place overall. John Swithenby followed up his opening around with a 73 to finish level for the tournament.

He was, however, just pipped to his first nett club championships by Lau, who recorded the lowest gross of the day to finish tied with Swithenby but a superior second day gave him the trophy on countback.

In the gross, Raybould broke away to win by six ahead of Pain.
