Samurai Judo Club’s younger juniors took five gold medals as well as a dozen silvers and bronzes at the club’s Orange & Under Championships.

In the red belt section, for the least experienced players, the girls had a field day with golds for Cerys Jones and Lola Grosvenor, two definite prospects for the future. Lola’s final was an all-Samurai affair, with Lucy Hickinbottom giving Lola a good fight. All three girls also had a go against the higher grades and showed great spirit.

In the red belt boys there were bronzes for Zach Main, Harrison Flello and Mateo Allen in the lighter weights. Higher up the weight categories, Ben Wilkes did well to win a bronze and there was an exellent debut for Luke Mole, who marked his first judo competition with an excellent maximum point throw and went on to win a bronze. His performance also earned him his first grade, which was middle red belt.

The girls higher grades saw Lily Deeming-Lane win four contests to reach the final before losing a good match against a Welsh girl and having to settle for silver. Her younger sister Bonnie was one of the girls she beat, and Bonnie did well to go on and win a bronze with several good wins.

Ellie McAteer was on explosive form. She had a tough group and won four to reach her final against a really good Liverpool girl. This was a great match, with Ellie eventually winning with a beautiful throw into a groundhold for maximum points.

In the higher grade boys, Dillon Walker and Dan Hickinbottom were both on very good form. Both reached the final, in Dan’s case with a spectacular win in his first contest and then the best throw of the day in his second, again for
