YOUNGSTER Thomas Bessant has become the youngest ever member of Bewdley Tae kwon do to earn his black belt in the Taekwondo Association of Great Britain (TAGB).

The eight-year-old came through a challenging examination where students are marked on their techniques, patterns, sparring skills and their theoretical knowledge.

Black Belt gradings are very comprehensive and require years of training and dedication.

New grades are awarded by a panel of national grading examiners, including Master David Oliver, ninth Dan who is the chairman of the British Taekwondo Council, the governing body for all Tae kwon do clubs in the UK.

Gradings are held at our national academy in Bristol only twice a year.

Thomas started the martial art when he was four years old and he has shown discipline and maturity beyond his years.

Also Grading from Bewdley Tae kwon do was assistant instructor Chris Rayment-Bishop.

In a tough group he shone out with awe-inspiring techniques, invoking many positive comments from other instructors watching his performance.

Adrian Mayall took up the martial art after his son Shaun earned a black belt.

After three-and-a-half years’ work, he also achieved a black belt.

Instructor Katie Billingham said: “Hopefully it will inspire other parents who watch the class week after week to get involved and see what they are really capable of.

“I am extremely proud of all of them “They have worked so hard to achieve this high standard and on behalf of everyone in the school I would like to say a big congratulations to our new black belts and dan grades.”

The club trains seven days a week and welcomes new starters of all ages and abilities.
