WYRE Forest Swimming Club have made an encouraging start to the Worcestershire County Swimming Championships in Redditch.

The opening events saw competitors in the masters categories in action, as well as 800 metre freestyle for girls and 1500m freestyle for boys.

David McMahon led the club’s masters swimmers in the 45 to 54 age section, winning gold in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

In the girls’ 800m freestyle, Wyre Forest were represented by Holly Workman and Matilda Calder in the 13 yrs age group, as well as Emma Elwell in the 16/over age category.

Team captain Emma Elwell stormed to bronze.

In the boys’ 1500m freestyle, the club had Jeremy Summers (12 yrs age group), Edward Cox (12 yrs age group), Adam Newey (13 yrs age group), Robert Darbyshire (13 yrs age group) and Jack O’Connell (16/over age group) in action.

Both Summers and O’Connell earned bronze medals in their respective age groups.

Head coach Lucy Walters said: “A massive well done to our masters swimmers and all those who took part in the long distance races.

“It really was fantastic to see our club so well represented.”

Women’s Masters results: Gemma Gleeson – 25/34 yrs age group – silver 50m freestyle, silver 50m butterfly; Laura Jones – 25/34 yrs age group – bronze 50m freestyle, bronze 50m butterfly, silver 50m breaststroke; Tracey Moore – 45/54 yrs age group – silver 50m freestyle, silver 50m butterfly, silver 50m breaststroke.
