STOURPORT Hockey Club stalwart David Knott returned to Wyre Forest with a trophy after captaining England’s Over-50s side to victory at the Masters World Cup in Australia.

Knott, who is born and bred in the town and has been a member of the club member since the age of 14, led his team to six wins in Canberra to take the title.

England had seven sides representing men and woman’s teams — aged between over-40s and over 55s.

The over-50s coped well with the blistering heat and made a fine start, as they defeated South African 6-0 and tournament favourites Australian 4-3.

They routed Canada 14-1 and then booked their place in the last four with a 4-0 success against Malaysia.

England then thrashed Germany 8-1 to set up a final against the hosts.

But Knott earned two penalty strokes as the over-50s won 3-1 as England claimed the title.

Knott, who is also vice-principal at Stourport School, said: “It was an honour to be representing my country and being asked to captain the national team; an added bonus was bringing back the trophy.”
