GEORGE Carroll got the better of his elder brother Frank in Bewdley Tennis Club’s traditional season opening Lionel Cuthbert tournament.

The teenager teamed up with Oli Toombes to take on left-handers Frank and Jason Curtis with all four having emerged through a round robin qualifying group.

The winning pair were presented with a shield, which was given to the club by workmates of the late Lionel Cuthbert – a talented player and former captain who died tragically early in the early 1980s and is still fondly remembered by many in the club.

In the annual Ladies Winter Doubles event, Vanessa Metti and Karen Vernon took the spoils in their final against Meg Clay and Julia Baylis.

Meanwhile the club is gearing up for an open day on Sunday when Wyre Forest folk of all ages who fancy having a go at tennis are invited to come along to the Stourport Road club from noon to 4pm.

An array of activities are planned on the day including mini tennis fun, a machine to measure service speed and target competitions.

The club’s head coach Geoff Barrie holds regular adult coaching groups and individual lessons while there are also adult and junior taster sessions – all equipment is supplied, you only need a pair flat-soled trainers.
