BEWDLEY Town are still seeking their first success in the West Midlands League this season after having to settle for a 1-1 draw with Stone Old Alleynians.

Although Bewdley bossed the majority of exchanges they found themselves trailing to a Danny Heard goal and had to thank substitute Ashley Stubbings for salvaging them a share of the points.

It signalled only their second point of the season from five starts but spokesman Steve Godfrey insisted: “Stone were much happier with the point than we were.

“They were camped inside their own territory for most of the second half and had to thank their goalkeeper and some well-timed blocks for keeping us at bay.

“It was a game we should have easily won but the ball just isn’t going in for us at the moment.”

Bewdley were due to visit much-fancied Malvern Town in a midweek game before travelling to Wolves Casuals on Saturday.

Bewdley then host arch rivals AFC Bridgnorth next Tuesday night.

Former Kidderminster Harriers goalkeeper Darren Steadman has stepped into the breach following a serious injury to shot stopper Nathan Drew.

Unlucky Drew is likely to be out until the end of October after he dislocated his elbow and damaged his arm during the game against Black Country Rangers.

Busy Bewdley are also running a reserve side this season in West Midlands League Division Two under the guidance of boss Wayne Payton and Russ Godfrey who is assistant player-manager.

The reserves’ start to the season mirrors the first team’s with two defeats and a draw from their three games so far.

Godfrey added: “We’ve wanted to run a reserve team for some time and the objective is to bridge the gap between youth and first-team football.”

Bewdley have also entered the Smedley Crook Cup for the first time for many years and commence the competition on September 6 when they take on Continental Star.

Away from the playing side, Bewdley will have to wait until next year to find out whether they can proceed with further drainage work.

Godfrey said: “We had the pitch drilled during June and it should see us through until the end of the season.”
