KIDDERMINSTER and Stourport AC’s Jack Lambert was delighted after winning the boys’ hammer competition at the National Athletics Championships in Bedford.

The 14-year-old’s winning throw of 62.59 metres puts him back to the top of the UK ranking for his age group.

His latest success follows only a couple of weeks after his victory at the Midlands Athletics Championships in Nuneaton.

The national title comes at the end of a very successful season which also included collecting three gold medals in shot put, discus and hammer at the Shropshire County Championships back in May.

In addition to the gold medals in the hammer and discus, he also won the Bristow Trophy for the best individual performance at the Shropshire Schools Championships in July.

He said: “The first thing you notice about the national championships are the number of cars in the car park.

“There were a lot more spectators than we ever get at an athletics league match at our track in Stourport.

“It was a great experience competing against the best boys in the country.”

The final was a tense affair with the lead changing hands several times before Lambert launched an enormous throw in the fifth round to set a new personal best and claim victory by over two metres.
