BOSS Phil Mullen admitted Bewdley had played their get-out-of-jail-free card after pinching a 3-2 victory over Bridgnorth six minutes into added time, writes Andy Mitchell.

The off-colour hosts conceded a penalty after 45 seconds which was rifled home by Jason Pike with the same player doubling Bridgnorth’s advantage four minutes before the break on Tuesday.

Mullen made two changes at half-time but Bewdley still struggled to get going and only found an extra gear after grabbing a lifeline through Jason Wellings with 21 minutes to play.

Lewis Pountney appeared to have rescued a point when his cross curled inside the far post in the first minute of injury time.

But there was still time for the ex-Stourport man to bundle home via a deflection some five minutes later to follow up Saturday’s 5-4 triumph at Wolverhampton Casuals with a second West Midlands League Premier Division success.

Mullen said: “We were fortunate. After how well we played on Saturday, it was back down to earth with a bump.

“They were first to the ball for most of the game but we got the breaks – and they were breaks – late on.

“I would have settled for 2-2, without question.

“At least we huffed and puffed and kept at it in the second half so the lads deserve credit.”

Both teams led twice in the weekend thriller.

John Griffin’s brace turned the tide after Bewdley had conceded first but Casuals levelled nine minutes after the interval.

Pountney got in on the act with number three and then levelled on 67 minutes after the hosts had moved 4-3 in front.

Sam Lester netted the winner with a minute to go.

Bewdley’s next West Midlands Premier clash is at Pegasus on Saturday (3pm ko)
