BEWDLEY Town players went to the dogs this week!

Their proposed game at title chasers Wolves Sporting Community was called off owing to an unfit pitch.

The players responded by going greyhound racing in Birmingham as part of their Christmas treat.

It was left to the reserves to fly the flag by pulling off a 2-1 win over bottom side Azaad Sports from Wednesfield in West Midlands League Division Two.

Goals from John Griffin and Matt Kerby made sure of the points but spokesman Steve Godfrey said: "The scoreline really flattered Azaad because we should have won by much more.

"John Griffin could have easily grabbed five or six goals himself, especially after missing a penalty.

"We didn't help ourselves by having Josh Jones sent off with 15 minutes remaining."

Bewdley Reserve were also reduced to 10 men when holding Malvern Town to a 1-1 draw in the opening leg of their Worcester Infirmary Junior Cup semi-final after goalkeeper Darren Steadman was dismissed following a professional foul.

The second leg takes place in Bewdley during February.

Bewdley Town now take a break until January 7 when they visit Stone Old Alleynians in the West Midlands League Premier Division, while the Reserves entertain Warstone Wanderers.

Busy Bewdley have boosted their ranks with the return of Dan Flowers following a spell with Lye Town.
