Midwest Counties Women’s League

Wyre Forest Phoenix 4 v Droitwich Belles 3

Droitwich's first team match was postponed which allowed their county team to strengthen the squad for this match, so WFP knew they were in for a difficult game.

However, in less than 10 minutes WFP took the lead when Sadie Brown latched onto a cross from captain Stef Lambert and fired past the on-coming keeper.

Droitwich dug in and quickly levelled with a 20 yard screamer that went in off the cross bar. WFP were determined to get the lead back and chances from Chelsea Mudge and Lisa Preece were both off target. Against the run of play the visitors gained the 2-1 lead, which they held on to half time.

Five minutes into the second half Droitwich extended their lead to 3-1 and it could have been 4-1 shortly after that, only for the goal to be disallowed for deliberate handball.

WFP made changes and immediately set about pressing their opponents and after a flurry of attempts, left back and player of the match, Amy Rutland, scored her first goal in adult football with a thumping shot from 25yds to the top right corner.

This lifted the team and some creative play from Chloe Whyley, Mudge and Preece caused the visiting defence problems, who ended up giving away a penalty as Preece was tripped in the box.

She stepped up to get her 16th of the season to date as she fired it to the right of the keeper and level the game. Droitwich became more defensive which allowed WFP to press high up the pitch and with 10 minutes left the ladies regained the lead.

Brown on the right wing switched play to new player Gee Howells on the left who took one touch in the box and fired it low across goal into the bottom right corner to get her first goal for the team, in only her second game.

The game ended 4-3 to Wyre Forest and keeps them third in the table on goal difference.

The team are away to Evesham on Sunday, who are level on points and have a game in hand. Kick off at 2pm at the Jubilee Stadium, Cheltenham Road, Evesham, Worcestershire, WR11 2LS.
