FORM player Jason Thompson completed another clean sweep of individual titles at Kidderminster Table Tennis League’s 75th annual finals night showcase.

But the hot favourite was made to work hard for his victory in the open singles final by his hard-hitting Bromley clubmate Jamie Cartwright.

Thompson got off to a solid start by winning the opening game but the younger player got his big forehand working to make it 1-1.

Cartwright was always in the match but made too many errors to defeat a player of Thompson’s calibre.

The 3-1 victory for Thompson meant he was able to add both the open singles and open doubles titles to the veteran singles and veteran doubles crowns he won earlier in the season.

The Bromley A player also went through the season undefeated but had to concede the prize for most wins to Cartwright, who played more matches for Bromley B over the course of the season.

The first final of the night at Kidderminster Harriers Social and Supporters Club saw Roundhead B’s James Perks defeat Roundhead A’s Marko Pavlovic in a close five setter to win the restricted singles, for players outside division one.

The hard bat final pitted two defensive players, Trevor Davies and Steve Horton, against each other. Harriers C player Davies had his chances in the first game but lost it to the England international veteran from Bromley. Horton then settled down and took the next two games comfortably.

A high quality open doubles final saw Jason Thompson and Jamie Cartwright beat Tom Savary and Svilen Andreev 3-1 with the game being settled by a memorable rally on match point.

After the break Davies again tasted defeat, this time at the hands of team-mate Alex Westwood, who fought back well to win the super vets final for players aged over 55.

The handicap singles saw the two Markos, Pavlovic and Radisa, battle it out, with Radisa narrowly squeaking home by one and a half points.

Guests of honour for the night were Jim Charles and his wife Val. Fitness fanatic Jim runs the legendary Jim’s Gym in Lye which is nearing its 60th anniversary and also serves as one of the league’s table tennis venues.

The league’s AGM will take place at Kidderminster Harriers on Monday May 15. All teams should send a representative or face a fine.

Meanwhile, Bromley’s summer singles league has started up: it runs on Wednesday evenings at their sports hall in Pensnett.
